As of 1 January 2026, the EU's DAC8 regulation requires all crypto-asset service providers, including One Trading, to collect and verify certain tax-related information from customers. This article explains what DAC8 is, why we ask for your Tax Identification Number (TIN) and Proof of Address, and what happens if this information isn't provided.
What is DAC8?
DAC8 (the eighth Directive on Administrative Cooperation) is an EU regulation that extends existing tax transparency rules to crypto-assets. It requires crypto-asset service providers like One Trading to collect, verify, and report certain customer information to national tax authorities, who then exchange this information with other EU member states.
This is part of a wider international effort — closely aligned with the OECD's Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) — to help tax authorities ensure crypto-related income and holdings are reported correctly.
Why do I need to provide this information?
Under DAC8, One Trading is legally required to identify the tax residency of every customer and collect supporting documentation to verify this. This applies to all customers, regardless of how much you trade or hold on the platform — we're not able to make exceptions, as this is a regulatory obligation rather than a One Trading policy choice.
What is a Tax Identification Number (TIN)?
A TIN is a unique number (or combination of numbers and letters) issued by a tax authority to identify you for tax purposes. Depending on your country of tax residency, this might be called:
- Germany: Steuerliche Identifikationsnummer ("Steuer-ID")
- Austria: Steuernummer
- Netherlands: Burgerservicenummer (BSN)
- United Kingdom: National Insurance Number (NINO)
- Switzerland: AHV/OASI number (Sozialversicherungsnummer)
- France: numéro fiscal de référence
- Italy: Codice Fiscale
- Spain: NIF (Número de Identificación Fiscal) or NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) for foreign residents
- Other countries: typically referred to as a Tax Identification Number (TIN) or Social Security Number — check your national tax authority's guidance if you're unsure
If you're a tax resident in more than one country, you may be asked to provide a TIN for each jurisdiction.
What counts as Proof of Address?
See What is Proof of Address and what documents are accepted? for accepted documents and requirements.
What happens if I don't provide this information?
If you don't complete your self-certification after being reminded, we're required under DAC8 to restrict your account from performing further reportable transactions. This may include restrictions on trading, deposits, or withdrawals until the required information has been provided and verified.
